Vocal classical is the root of S.D.M.Govt. Music College because the founder of this College Late Pulin Debbarma himself was a maestro of vocal classical & his private Music Institution has turned into Govt. Music College with Visharad Course after affiliated by the Govt. of Tripura in 1964. B.MUS two year Degree course started with Vocal Classical in 1977 under Calcutta University. In 1987 Tripura University affiliated with this College. In 1997 Instruments (Sitar & Sarod ) were introduced in a Two-year B.MUS degree course. Instruments were included with Vocal Classical department in 2002 when Three year Hons degree Course started & the subject was named as Vocal Classical & Instrumental Music.
Vocal Classical & Instrumental Music Introduced in Three-year Diploma Course in 2010. Now this subject is running simultaneously both in D.Mus & B.Mus(H) degree course. Vocal & Instrumental Music was also introduced as a Core Course subject in the CBCS Six Semester Bachelor Degree Programme in 2014.
The eminent Artists & Gurus of Tripura were faculty members of this Dept. Namely Late Pulin Debbarma (vocal classical), Late Utpal Krishna Debbarma ( Sitar), Late Anath Bandhu Debbarma ( Sarod), Late Ratan Sengupta (vocal classical), Late Tapasi Data (vocal classical), Late Kishore Rn. Singha (Sitar) Sri Alokendra Debbarma (Sarod) etc. Eminent Violin Artist & Guru Late Dr Tripurendra Bhowmick was the principal of this College.
This dept. Organizes the birth anniversary of two great maestros of Vocal Classical Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhende & Pt. Vishnu Digamber Paluskar every year. The students of this dept. take part in most of the programs organized by the College, ICA, Govt / non-govt organizations. Most of the pass-out students of this dept. are established & scattered in India.
