The department of Rabindra Sangeet of SDM Govt. Music College is entrusted with the responsibility of teaching the musical creations of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore – Rabindra Sangeet in its true essence.
Rabindra Sangeet was introduced in the college as an Honours Course in the three years Bachelor Degree Programme (BMus) of Tripura University in 2004. Since 2010 it is being offered by the college as a course in the three years Diploma Programme (DMus). From 2014 as per the guidelines of Tripura University, Choice Based Credit System was initiated for the BMus course and the syllabus of Rabindra Sangeet was updated to meet the contemporary needs of the students. Rabindra Sangeet was also introduced as a Core Course subject in the CBCS Six Semester Bachelor Degree Programme in the same year.
Apart from the academic activities, the department conducts workshops and various programs throughout the year to enhance the organizational capabilities and inculcate professionalism among the students. Some of the calendar programs of the department are –
- Rabindra Janmajayanti on 25thBoishakh to celebrate the Birth Anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
- KabiPranam on 22ndShrabonto pay tributes to Rabindranath Tagore on his Death Anniversary.
- Basanta Utsav in collaboration with all the departments of the college to celebrate the festival of colors – Holi.
The students of this department actively and enthusiastically take part in these programs as well as other programs being organized by the college under the guidance of the qualified faculty members of the department. Also, the students play a leading role in representing the college in various programs of Government and Non-Government Organizations.
A good proportion of passed out students of this department go on to pursue higher studies in various reputed institutions of the country. Among the alumni of the department, many have excelled in various spheres and have established themselves as academicians and professional artists.
Eminent artists and academicians from reputed Universities who had come to conduct workshops and exams in the department include Late Dr. Arun Kumar Basu, Prof. (Dr.) Indrani Ghosh, Prof. Agnibha Bandyopadhyay, and many others.
